Recent Engineering Projects

Currently we are working on some of the most exciting infrastructure projects being undertaken in Australia. From urban road and rail projects to coal and iron ore process and infrastructure works we have a tremendous portfolio of projects underway.

Take a closer look at some of our major projects.

EngineeringCurragh North Project - Queensland

The challenge: Deliver an ongoing $360 million program of major upgrades to Wesfarmers’ Curragh North open-cut coal mine in Queensland. Started in 2004, this program of asset upgrades will give the Curragh North open-cut coal mine the capacity to produce up to 7 Mtpa of coal for export.

EngineeringThe project involved a series of key infrastructure upgrades including:

  • Mine haul road pavement, earthworks and drainage upgrades
  • Flood protection levees
  • Conveyor/materials handling upgrades
  • Coal Preparation Plant upgrade

The project called for end-to-end project management involving pre-feasibility studies, detailed design, procurement and commissioning. The works involved the detailed integration of all Engineering disciplines including Structural, Mechanical, Civil and Geotechnical.

EngineeringEast Link

The challenge: Design and construct EastLink, Australia's largest urban road project, connecting Melbourne's outer eastern and southern suburbs.

For the EastLink project in Melbourne's Mitcham-Frankston corridor the PB Engineering and Transport teams designed 40km of motorway and roads through Melbourne's busy south east. The works included 17 interchanges, 80 bridges, extensive urban design and landscaping, plus 38km of shared-use bicycle and pedestrian paths. PB in a JV with a partner consultant was responsible for the design and documentation of the $2.5b project.

EngineeringLane Cove Tunnel

The challenge: Complete Sydney's orbital motorway network by connecting the Gore Hill Freeway with the M2 via the 3.6km Lane Cove Tunnel.

This complex $1.1 billion project involved construction of twin two-lane tunnels 3.6km long, with an additional lane provided in some sections to further enhance traffic flow and safety. The project also involved the provision of an a new transit lane in each direction on the Gore Hill Freeway, new north-facing ramps to and from the Warringah Freeway, a new bridge over the Lane Cove River and modifications to cycle, pedestrian and public transport facilities. Our Engineering team provided detailed design and documentation for every aspect of the works - alignment design, tunnel design, ventilation & fire engineering, traffic control signals, electrical and geotechnical. We also provided construction phase services.
