About our Project Management Division

Our Project Management Group is a vital strategic business unit that complements our engineering, planning, infrastructure and environmental operations. Offering invaluable insight and expertise across the project, program and construction management spectrum, our 160-strong multi-disciplinary team operates across Australia for a variety of clients in a myriad of industry sectors.

As a business, we are widely considered to be at the forefront of EPCM (engineering, procurement and construction management) projects. Increasingly, our clients are relying on us to deliver work within this type of framework, delivering entire projects from first concept and environmental impact assessment processes, through to financing, design, procurement and construction, then on to start-up.

Given all this, it is no surprise our Project Management team is so diverse, both technically and geographically. If you share our open, innovative approach, our exciting team environment will give you the opportunity to tackle the most challenging projects. You will have the opportunity to experience Australia's unique lifestyle as our projects are located across the country. Ours is, without doubt, one of the most dynamic and engaging project management operations around.

Recent Project Management Case Studies

We tackle project management challenges of all shapes and sizes here at PB. But with the economy booming and investment in infrastructure continuing apace, it is our ability to manage multi-project, multi-phase infrastructure programs from concept to completion that really sets us apart: transport interchanges; toll road networks; water and wastewater facilities; leading-edge information and communications technology; intelligent transport systems (ITS); large-scale scientific and environmental improvement initiatives; the list goes on.

Dawson Mine Project

The challenge: Develop and expand Anglo Coal Australia's (ACA) Moura Coal Mine in Queensland, increasing the production rate and exploiting newly discovered coal reserves.

Dawson Mine ProjectACA asked us to strategically redevelop the predominantly open-cut coal mine at Moura, now known as Dawson. This involved developing new resources at Dawson South and North, while continuing to develop the existing Dawson Central site. By doing so, and integrating all three operations, our aim was to increase the current production rate to 12.6 Mtpa of product coal (15 Mtpa ROM).

Dawson Mine ProjectIt was a project that called for a range of capabilities, not least project management expertise. It involves feasibility studies, risk assessments, safety management planning, infrastructure design, water management and coal handling, as well as transport and geotechnical issues. We also assisted with ACA's environmental impact statement (EIS), conducting discussions, presentations and negotiations with relevant authorities during the mining lease approval process. The fully integrated PB team is now delivering the works from design through to commissioning.

Rolleston Coal Project

The challenge: Deliver Xstrata's Rolleston Coal Project, their first greenfields mine site, created to produce one of the world's cleanest coals - a low-emission, high-quality thermal coal.

Rolleston Coal ProjectThis $500 million project in central Queensland called for a wide range of project management services. Starting in 2001, we worked on the mine feasibility study, community consultation and socio-economic impact assessment. We then went on to provide a range of technical and management services for the project, continuing through the project cycle to the last quarter of 2005, when Xstrata began commercial coal mining at the site - the mine was operational on time and on budget, with the first commercial trainload of coal hauled two months ahead of schedule.

Rolleston Coal ProjectWe were responsible for overseeing every aspect of the site's development, not least the $170 million EPCM contract for the mine's infrastructure. We managed all aspects of the project including: design and earthworks, as well as project cost controls and construction management; a feasibility study and preliminary design for the 110 km Bauhinia Regional Rail line used to haul coal to Gladstone; plus an environmental impact statement for the 112 km powerline running from Blackwater to a new Rolleston substation.
